These houses and towers lie half-built and half-destroyed along the walls of the canyon, like the gates to a chamber beyond. The whole ruined city seems like an antechamber to a royal throne, but all that lies beyond is a series of small, threadlike caves. These caves hold the rest of the city - the alleys and roads are prominent among the rubble, and old carts still sit, now fossilized beneath the caverns' roof.

The town is deserted, and has been for several centuries, for its existence to have faded from the memories of all people, even the locals. Where it once was ornate and designed to stand out, the ruined scaffolding now blends in with the rocks of the canyon's entrance. The city itself is the ancient mummified skeleton of a ghost town.

A young woman awakens.

She awakens on the ground, staring up into the sky through the bones of a half-constructed building that has stood for potentially millenia.

Where am I? she wonders. She looks around. None of this does she recognize; but then, she cannot seem to call back what she would recognize. Her memory only goes back so far, and most of it entails a lot of voiceless screaming, a deafening silence.

The memory of the silence of the void brings her upright. "Lucina," she says. Yes, that is her name. Of course it was her name. Why should she for a second doubt it was her name? It wasn't just something her parents called her when she was young - at least, she assumed she had had parents when she was young, and she hoped they had called her Lucina.

Because that is - was? - her name, and it is a part of her, just as much as the sword at her waist is a part of her.

Without looking, she feels at her waist for the somehow familiar weight of the rapier. Its presence is comforting, and simultaneously a small surprise. A surprise that the sword had remained with her, even when the journey through the ephemeral eternity of the void ripped her entire past from her - no, that would be inaccurate. As far as Lucina can tell, she has had no past outside of the void, never existing until the present.

The thought is both chilling and comforting.

Lucina doesn't know which emotion disturbs her more.

Deciding that it is useless to contemplate whether she was just "born" or created at that exact moment or if she had spiraled through a void and undergone a rebirth, Lucina decides to explore her current location. Possibly some recognition will jog her memory?

If only. All the walk does is make her more confused. Yet... her memory gives her an impression of experience. She knows that these are ruins, she knows that a normal city would not be so deserted. She hopes that there are normal cities wherever she is. She is familiar with the concept of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, even if she doesn't know how. She hopes desperately that she is not alone here. It is her greatest fear at the present moment.

If she had a memory of the post-apocalyptic world she had fled from all those years ago, she would be having flashbacks. Instead, the effect is made somewhat worse by her lack of memory. The great void of her past makes her present state uncertain. What if she doesn't exist? What is this is the afterlife, an eternal punishment for SOMETHING she had done, and she was cursed to neither remember it nor anything else? What if she is cursed to wander, unknowing?

The sun is setting. This provides some minimal comfort. Time passes here, at least. The time passes in silence, an oppressive, haunting silent scream.

Lucina almost calls out, just to hear some noise, to remind herself that she still exists. But the echo, reverberating in the deserted street, would serve only as a larger reminder that she was alone. Perhaps her voice would only be an illusion, audible only to her ears.

Perhaps she'll go insane if she doesn't see someone else soon.

When the stone hits her in the leg, Lucina is startled. When she turns to see a burly-looking woman approaching with an axe, she's almost relieved. When she turns and sees two rough-looking ladies approaching as well, sinister looks on their faces, she's once again unsure. If these bandits were here and nobody else, this could be where the evil, vile, and brutish were sent when they died. Lucina didn't feel evil, vile, or brutish, but who knows what she's done?

A question occurs to her. If this is the afterlife... could they die again?

Lucina charges forward with her rapier before the first bandit can move her axe to block. The sword quickly finds its mark, rendering her useless, and soon dead. The other two close in as Lucina turns around, blocking both of them with ease. When another two approach, Lucina modifies her defensive strategy into a retreat. As she starts to gain ground, another rock hits her in the head.

She wakes up without her sword in another ruined house. Spikes adorn the outer walls, and the inside is decorated with skulls. "Yours'll be joinin' them, sweetie," a rather toad-ish woman in rusty plate armor says. "Right after we pry ev'rythin' of value off your body. Don't be worryin' too much though. We've got decency. We won't be sellin' your body off, no matter how valuable it may be."

"Can I ask one question?" Lucina manages to ask, ignoring the pain in her jaw. "How many people live in the nearest city?"

"The nearest city, eh? Few hundred, I suppose. Why? You plannin' on gettin' some of their number to deal us some retribution?" The woman leans down to chuckle in Lucina's face, then freezes up.

"I can deal the retribution myself, thank you," Lucina says, removing her dagger. These bandits were incompetent, not checking a captured woman for hidden weapons. What's more, they'd given her everything she needed. Proof that she was not alone, an opportunity to escape, and hope.

Lucina assassinates two more guards from the shadows in such a way before finding her rapier, stored in a room with lots of other weapons. Lucina considers taking some, but none feel quite right in her hand, so she guesses she doesn't have as much experience with them as with her sword and dagger.

Deciding not to risk the chance of the remaining bandits ganging up on her, she decides to kill them stealthily. The task is grim, but businesslike. Lucina leaves their bodies on the ground, to be found later in the form of skeletons by future archaeologists.

Night having fallen hours ago, Lucina walks the darkened streets of the ruins and smiles out of relief. She wanders for a few minutes until she finds a building with solid walls and a roof in which she can take shelter for the night.

When morning light floods in through the weathered archway meant to eventually house a door, Lucina awakens again and sets out to business. Filled once again with hope, she exits the ruins. She stands outside the wall that would have functioned as a gate and stares out at the sandy expanse. She steels her resolve and vows to comb this desert for the city she has heard of.

First, she needs to find a source of water. The single waterskin in her possession will not last more than a day at most. She contemplates returning to the ruins in search of a well or a spring, but if one had been drilled in the city's youth, it had surely dried up now.

Now that I know I exist, it would be a shame to die of thirst, Lucina ponders. With a clear goal in mind, Lucina sets forward, putting the city of her origin -- or re-origin -- behind her.
