PostSubject: The Adventures of Wheatley and Zerdark: Koopa Island Edition   Mon Aug 01, 2016 9:04 pm

First topic message reminder :

A small ship begins to approach an unfamiliar harbor. The man at the helm yells to wake his sleeping passengers. "Oi! Wake your asses up! We've got land! Land ho! Lan-" "Aaaaaguh!" A thud is heard as Wheatley collides with the man's head. "Oww..." "Ey!" An un-amused Zerdark stands in front of the door to the captain's room. "Would you stop your screaming you drunk cyclops? I'm trying to catch up on sleep..." "What're ye talkin' about? It's got to be way past mornin' now!" "Well someone kept me up all night with their sea shanties and partying." "Aah, don't pretend like you don't love em!" "Tavish. You wouldn't stop for hours. I only got to sleep sometime after 4 in the morning. You know how I know this? I threw my watch at the wall in frustration and it must have broke. For all I know it could have been even later." "Eheheh...sorry laddie." "You're paying for that watch by the way. Now if you pull this crap again, I'm drowning you in the saltwater and sailing myself home." "Ooh, that's just the crankiness talking! Come on, have a drink with me! That'll cheer ya right up!" "No. No it won't. What'll cheer me up is finding that island I described to you. I specifically asked for your help because of your past experiences sailing. I swear if I made the wrong decision-" "What'd ye think I got ya up for? We're coming up on it right now!"

The ship begins to dock at the harbor, where a bunch of Koopas begin to gather. Zerdark just looks at them and sighs internally. "...You've gotta be fucking kidding me." "What?" "This is what I was worried about? They're adorable. I was expecting battle hardened warriors, not a trip to the aquarium." "Oh, look at all the turtles! I've never seen em that big before!" "Tavish, you stay with the ship. I'm gonna go look around." "Ooh, you mean it? Maybe we can take one home with us!" "I somehow doubt that'll go over well. Besides, do you remember your pet goldfish?" "I was only trying to hand-feed it, I didn't think I'd electrocute the thing!" "You don't even have hands!" "Well...alright, I see, point to you. That might have been a flaw in my otherwise flawless plan. Just a small one though." "I'm not getting you another pet." "Aww...okay then." "Now then, let's get moving. With any luck, maybe these people have built an inn nearby." "You just want to sleep? But we just got here!" "I see an opportunity to nap, I'm taking it. Why do you think I told Tavish to stay behind?" "Ah...fair point."

"Looks like your receipt bought us another day. You're not out of the wood yet however. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say our mutual 'friend' is the one that planted that testimony in that guard's head. I wouldn't be surprised if he's left more fun surprises for us."

"I hate to be negative, but I've seen such patterns before. More traps are well within the realm of possibility. I have my work cut out for me. The good news however is that the prosecution is just as much in the dark as we are. The killer may try, but fake evidence doesn't really hold up upon closer examination. Especially not a lazy excuse for a murder weapon like that."

"Well try not to lose too much sleep over it. I'll be seeing what I can uncover on my own today. You'll likely be escorted back to a holding cell soon so it's best we wrap up now so I can get to work."

"Exactly my point. Go get some sleep. I'll do everything I can but I need you more coherent for tomorrow's trial."

"Let's hope it runs more smoothly than today's," she says simply, in a very tired-sounding voice.

"I certainly hope so. Today was right out of one of those courtroom drama movies. Let's hope we don't get to the part where I get death threats. Do try to rest up for tomorrow's trial. Something tells me we're both going to need it."

After the trial, Zerdark returns to the Glitz Pit. "So, what are we investigating, exactly? Where are we lookin?" "What better place to start than the crime scene?" Zerdark makes his way backstage, but not before seeing more guards than usual stationed there. As well as some rowdy fans trying to get backstage to investigate themselves. Zerdark pays them no mind and makes his way to the storage room with no resistance. There, he finds the assistant detective from earlier, Pennington.  "Hm, a silver trench coat, a hat, a stern look in your eye...could you be the lawyer from before?" "Congratulations detective, you've cracked the case. Now that we've settled that, maybe we can get to the actual investigation?" "Aha! Yes of course you're here for that. We're just about wrapping up here anyway, so take a look. Though I doubt you have a chance at beating MY detective skills!" "I wouldn't dream of it."

INVESTIGATION START!
Spoiler:

"If I might ask, why is the body still here and not at a coroner's office?" "Aha! With my skills of deduction, I have determined that you're not from around here! Well, we do things a certain way here. A coroner comes to the crime scene, and we preserve the body on the spot so we can preserve the scene. Nothing out of place, not even the body! It's all very efficient I'm told." "An...interesting way of doing things. I can't really argue with that." Zerdark bends down to inspect the body. "Quite a large head wound...no doubt about it, fatal. I'd wager instantaneous." "Yep, the coroner thinks so too!" "Murder weapon aside, the autopsy report seems accurate. Though I can't imagine how an expert would reasonably come to the conclusion of the clipboard being the weapon..." "Well, everyone makes mistakes." "That's quite the mistake...nothing for it now I suppose. We should focus on finding the actual weapon. Have you found anything?" "I'm sad to admit that even my keen observational skills have failed me." "Not that I don't believe you, but I'll just take a look around for myself." Zerdark looks around until he finds something large covered by a tarp. "Ah, careful! I was told by my boss to leave that area alone. He said it has nothing to do with the case and we shouldn't bother with it." "Interesting. Well he didn't tell me anything, nor is he my boss. So I think I'll just take a quick glance for myself." Under the tarp, Zerdark sees a broken spotlight. The glass is broken and there's a faint amount of blood on it. "Well well, what have we here? A blunt yet broken object? Not related to the case, hm?" "Gyah! How can this be?! Was my boss mistaken?" "Did you and your forces seriously not explore every inch of this area? I've heard about your low crime rate, but you're way too lax when it comes to your investigations as a result." "I...I feel only shame..." "As you should." "Now what have we here?" "B-Boss!" A gruff looking penguin with a cigar in his mouth walks into the room. "So you're that upstart I've been hearing about. Upstart in the ring, then in the court. Now it seems your muscling in on my crime scene." "Detective Herringway I assume? I'm just the guy doing your job for you. Are you and your forces really this incompetent?" "Hmph. Listen up, boy. This is my investigation and we do things my way. I won't have you undermining my authority any longer. Out of my scene!" "So that's the way you wanna play this? Very well. I'll cooperate. You have a good day, Detective." Zerdark walks out of the scene with no resistance and heads out into the hallway.

"Wha? You really just left? Now what are we supposed to investigate?" "Relax, I have all I need from the crime scene. The good detective's reaction confirmed it. Though now I need to confirm something that's been at the back of my mind since I saw that spotlight..." Zerdark heads to the ring and looks up. "Just as I thought. One of the spotlights are missing. And if I'm right..." He searches the floor and finds some broken glass. "And here I thought the janitors were just inept here." "Can you explain it for me? I'm kinda lost here, if I'm honest." "Well I wouldn't want to ruin the mystery for you, now would I? I already have to explain it in court. Might as well let you feel the suspense too." "Aw, no fair!" "Well you have plenty of time to piece the puzzle together yourself before tomorrow. Now come along, there's one person I'd like to question before we call it a day."

Zerdark heads back out into the hall, only this time he walks to Grubba's office. He knocks on the door, but no response. There doesn't seem to be any guards around either. They were all probably in the lobby keeping the crowd under control. With no witnesses, Zerdark decides to pick the lock. Within just a minute, the door opens and Zerdark steps inside. "There we are...not as hard to pick as his desk, oddly enough. Man's not here either...let's take another good look around." Zerdark walks over to the desk and this time finds a half-finished letter lazily covered by an envelope.

"H
Enclosed is a check for 125,000 coins. I trust you'll ha"

"Well now...Grubba, you clever bastard. Not clever enough though I see." Zerdark takes out his own piece of parchment and begins writing something." "What are you writing?" Zerdark ignores him and finishes an exact replica of the letter. "What are you doin? Isn't that forgin' evidence? Isn't that, you know, illegal?" "Good to see you've been paying attention. Ordinarily, you'd be correct. However I discovered a loophole a number of years back, and I learned the same loophole extends here." He takes the original letter and replaces it with his forgery. "Using forged evidence in court is indeed a crime. However, this letter is the real deal. I'm just leaving a piece of paper with some writing on it for Grubba. As far as the law is concerned, that's just a piece of paper with no bearing on the case at this point. This letter on the other hand will be very useful. And this way, Grubba won't be suspicious of the fact that his letter is gone." "Ohhhh, okay." "Now let's get the hell out of here. We have all we need for now."

PostSubject: Re: The Adventures of Wheatley and Zerdark: Koopa Island Edition   Sat Jan 28, 2017 5:30 pm

The next morning, Zerdark is once again sitting in the Defendant Lobby. However, there is one thing odd about the lobby today. ”So, uh, where is the defendant, exactly? Not really much of a ‘Defendant’ lobby without the defendant, is it? Weird.” ”I think she’s still being questioned. If you remember from yesterday’s trial, the prosecutor wasn’t very happy with how things were going either. He’s probably trying to get all the information he can. In any case I think we can safely rule out the possibility of getting to speak with our client this morning. Lovely.” ”Well, uh…you still have me! And the evidence, still got that. Fairly important, that. I’d assume.” ”Indeed…well it’s almost time. Do me a favor and try to keep quiet during the trial again. I really need to concentrate. This is going to be a long battle…”

June 10th, 10:00AM
District Court
Courtroom No. 1

Spoiler:

"Court is now in session for the trial of Jolene.” "The prosecution is ready, your honor.” ”The defense is ready, your honor.” "Yesterday, we ended the trial with nothing. No evidence, no reliable witnesses, zilch. Nada. Today I want to rectify that error. Prosecutor Kamek. Yesterday I demanded we hear an explanation from the police on this matter. Are you prepared to summon the detective in charge of this case?” "Yes your honor. The prosecution calls Detective Herringway to the stand.” ”(Herringway first? Oh good…this should be great.)”

Herringway makes his way to the stand, rudely smoking a cigar even in court. "Witness, please state your name and occupation for the record.” ”Hmph. Name’s Herringway. Detective. Homicide division.” "Herringway, you have a lot of explaining to do. What kind of outfit are you running detective?!” "Your Honor, the witness was just about to explain himself. While I make no excuses for him, I think his explanation will be satisfactory.” "Hm…very well. Witness, begin your testimony. Testify as to what’s been going on with this case of yours.”

Spoiler:

Witness Testimony – Herringway’s Excuse
”Clearly this is the fault of my young apprentice Pennington. I let him handle the investigation this time. I thought he was ready, but clearly I was wrong. He’s the one that decided on the murder weapon and found that witness of yours. I apologize on his behalf, and I’ve been running the investigation personally since yesterday’s trial.”

"And there you have it. Everything can be chalked up to the actions of an amateur. While punishment is still warranted, we can trust the more professional opinions of the witness before us today. I think we’re good to continue, wouldn’t you agree?” ”(Well that’s the biggest load of bull I’ve heard so far. I guess it’s time to start discrediting the good detective…)” "I would have to agree. Now that we have a professional back on the case, we can continue. Mr. Gavin? Do you still want to cross examine the witness?” ”I would. I still have some questions for the detective regarding his apprentice and his own thoughts on the case as it stands.” "Very well. If we’re getting details about the case anyway, I see no problems letting you ask your questions. You may begin your cross examination Mr. Gavin.” ”Detective, what is your opinion on the so-called murder weapon?” ”A rookie mistake. The clipboard was likely used in the struggle, but it couldn’t be the murder weapon.” ”Then what do you think the actual weapon is?” ”Afraid we don’t know yet. We’re still looking. It’s possible our crafty killer already did away with it.” "And who other than the defendant with her unrestricted access through the building could so easily dispose of a weapon?” ”Ngh…you’re just speculating here, but I recognize your point. Still, you have no concrete proof for this theory of yours.” "And what about you? Do you have a theory Mr. Shroud? How about some evidence to go with it? If you think you can do better, we’re waiting.” ”Only thing that’ll change my mind on this is if you’ve found a murder weapon.  Don’t suppose you found it?” ”Actually, I can do better. I think I found the murder weapon.” "What?! You…you’re bluffing, right? You found the weapon when our detectives couldn’t?” ”Well I’m waiting, boy. What’s this ‘real weapon’ of yours look like?” ”It’s something you ‘missed’ in your investigation. Conveniently hidden by a tarp. Did you know that there’s a broken spotlight there? And it happens to have blood on it.” "A…spotlight?” ”Well, a broken spotlight would certainly be big enough to use as a weapon. And it’s much more believable to kill instantaneously than a clipboard. ”Your Honor, the defense requests that the spotlight be retrieved, and the blood tested. If it’s the victim’s blood, then we have our weapon.” ”Of all the…prosecutor, why aren’t you objecting to this?!” ”The prosecution has no problems with this. In fact, I concede that the defense’s theory holds water. If you don’t like it, you should have done a better job. Then I could better do MY job, detective.”

Don Pianta slams his gavel down. ”Enough bickering! The defense’s request is granted. The Court will take possession of the spotlight in question. In the meantime, the defense’s current theory is the best one we have to go on for the moment. So until the blood test proves otherwise, we must continue under the assumption that the spotlight is indeed the murder weapon. If this proves to be a waste of time however, I will be very unhappy. Is that clear, Mr. Gavin?” ”Crystal.” ”Good. Now then, if the spotlight is the weapon, who used it? I find it unlikely that the defendant could have used this weapon with her small stature.” ”Very observant, your honor. If the spotlight is the weapon, I argue that my client couldn’t possibly be the murderer. Therefore, a verdict of Not Guilty would be the only appropriate conclusion to this trial.” ”Objection! There are ways that someone like her could have used it! For example, we can’t rule out the possibility that she dropped it onto the victim’s head from above. It wouldn’t be that hard to push it from up above on one of the crates.” ”I suppose not. I think more questioning is in order. Detective, I want to hear more about the crime scene and its layout. Having everyone on the same page in regards to this will help in the long run.” ”Fine, take a look at this sketch.”

The detective pulls out a sketch of the crime scene and points at it. ”See here? There’s a whole bunch of crates in the room. Enough to act like another floor above the main floor. It’s possible that the defendant pushed the weapon down onto the victim’s head here, just like the prosecutor said. All she’d have to do then is drag the body out from under it and arrange the crime scene like she did.” ”That sounds plausible. If there are no counter theories from the defense, then-“ ”Objection! I have a theory of my own. But first, a question. Detective, was there any shards of glass found in the crime scene?” ”I don’t know what you’re getting at with this, but no. We didn’t find any glass there.” ”Really, you didn’t find anything? How shocking.” ”You saying something about the way I do my job?!” ”Actually, yes I am. I have several problems with the way you do your job. Because if you had done your job properly, you’d know where I’m going with this.” ”And where are you going with this?”

Spoiler:

”To the true scene of the crime, naturally.” ”Objection! This is getting ridiculous now. ‘True scene of the crime’? This isn’t some radio play, Shroud.” ”Oh I assure you, I’m well aware. I’m quite serious. Think about it. If the spotlight were used as a weapon, wouldn’t the glass part of it break? Shards would scatter everywhere. But there were no shards to be found.” ”So? Maybe the spotlight was broken beforehand. That would be why it was backstage and not being used!” ”Normally that would be a good explanation. But what if I told you I found the missing shards? All we’d need to do is test the shards to see if they are consistent with the spotlight.” ”You seem very sure of yourself. Very well, where did you find the shards? Where is this ‘real’ crime scene?” ”Before the body was discovered, I accidentally stepped on some shards of broken glass right before my big match on the night of the murder. Yesterday, I checked again and found them still there. Your honor, I found these shards in the Glitz Pit Arena. The spotlight must have originally been broken there. And if it’s the victim’s blood on that spotlight, it can only mean that it was broken when it was used to commit the murder!” ”You can’t be serious! All we have to go on is what you said you saw!” ”A simple fix to this. Have the shards collected and matched up to the spotlight. Then the evidence will back my claims up. If there’s no match, then the shards are simply worthless and I was wrong. Simple.” ”The defense’s request will be granted. The shards of glass will be collected and analyzed along with the spotlight. I would like to remind you that your whole case depends on this, Mr. Gavin.”

Sometime later, the results of the tests come back. ”The investigators have come back and I have the results here in my hands. According to what I’m reading, the blood on the spotlight does indeed belong to the victim, and the shards of glass match.” ”Well well. Looks like I did your job for you, detective. You’re welcome.” ”Grr…” ”Well if all this is true, the only logical conclusion is that the crime took place in the arena! But how did the body get moved to the storage area?” ”Simple. The real culprit moved the body to throw off the investigation. We fell right into their trap.” ”Hold on! If what you said is all correct, then what is going on with the investigation?! I heard nothing of this! How am I supposed to do my job like this?!” ”An excellent question, Kamek. How are you supposed to do your job when you’re consistently handed false evidence to work with? If it’s any consolation, none of this is your fault. It’s all the fault of that sham of a detective over there.” ”Y-You watch your mouth boy!” ”Before we move on however, that is one issue I’d like to go over with the Court. The issue of police incompetence. Just why has the department been so terrible at collecting the proper evidence and piecing it together? I believe I know the answer.” ”By all means, enlighten us. I can’t wait to hear this.”

Spoiler:

”Your honor, the defense would like to formally accuse Detective Herringway of obstruction of justice and being an accessory to this murder.” ”W-Whaaat?!” ”Hold it right there! You just think you’re hot shit, don’t you?! First you tell me how to do my job, now you’re accusing me?!” ”Yes, this is over the top, even for you! I don’t suppose you’ve got evidence to support this new claim of yours?” ”Your honor, I wouldn’t make a claim like this if I didn’t have evidence to back me up. During my investigation yesterday, I found a suspicious letter. It describes a payment made out to a certain ‘H’ for the amount of 125,000 coins. I present the letter in question to the court.” ”What the…you’re saying the detective’s been takin’ bribes?!” ”I’m afraid so. For one reason or another, the detective has been bribed to speed the investigation along. I don’t know if he’s been fed a narrative to spin to us or if he came up with the evidence on his own, but one thing is obvious. We’ve all been taken along for a ride, but it’s the end of the line Herringway!” ”T-That fool…gah! NOOOO!”

Spoiler:

”…Prosecutor Kamek, where is Herringway now?” ”He’s been arrested and taken in for questioning, Your Honor.” "I just can’t believe this nonsense. This has never happened before. Not in my court. The detective in charge of the case…arrested on suspicion for bribery and corruption. This throws the entire case into question! All we’re left with is questions. How much of the evidence can be trusted? Who bribed Herringway? Why? And most importantly…who killed Bandy Andy? I can’t say I believe the case against Jolene no more, but I’m not in a position to declare a verdict here.” ”We seem to have reached an impasse. The system’s hands are tied here.” ”This is all just insanity…how could this happen?” ”Wee hee hee! Looks like you’re all hopeless!”

Spoiler:

King Boo suddenly appears in the middle of the courtroom, looking all around. ”What a mess you people have gotten yourselves into, huh? Can’t trust anything anymore, can you? Sucks, doesn’t it? But I can’t just let things go on like this. So listen up. Fun’s fun, but there’s still a missing Boo out there. If no one’s gonna accept responsibility for it, trials are supposed to be our way of finding out who’s really guilty. But you’ve all really botched this up royally. So here’s what I’m thinking. We tried it this way, now we’re doing this MY way! Here’s what’s gonna happen. We’re gonna do this whole investigation thing all over again and we’re gonna do it right this time! I’m gonna choose the new detective in charge of it. Also, I’m treating everyone who was at the Glitz Pit that day as a suspect! Actually, hell, I’m treating everyone involved in this case as a suspect! But relax, I’m not arresting everybody. But everyone’s going back to the Pit, and they’re not allowed to leave until tonight! After the investigation today, we’re holding one last trial, and we’re doing it my way! We’re all going to my mansion and I’ll judge this trial from now on. And no one’s leaving until we have our guilty party! And waiting for our murderous friend is an immediate execution! Sound fun? Well I’ll be waiting for everyone at the mansion! See you later, fools! Hee hee hee!” ”Well, looks like King Boo just adjourned court for you. If you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.” Zerdark leaves without another word, and no one stops him. Everyone else is stunned into silence for a while before other Boos arrive to escort everyone out of the courtroom. This is King Boo’s show now.

Jolene has just returned to the defendant's lobby, the interrogation at last concluded for now. Her hair seems combed, not disheveled -- they've finally allowed her a brief respite. "I heard what happened. King Boo wasn't exactly quiet about it."

"No, he certainly wasn't. He's made his position quite clear. He wants answers and he wants them now." Zerdark takes a minute to sit down before sighing. "Hell of a trial so far. Police corruption, a missing ghost, a planted witness, and an appearance from King Boo himself. I've been in my fair share of investigations but I don't mind telling you that this has been the most stressful trial I've been part of. Any more fun and exciting prizes, and I'll be joining King Boo in death."

"It shouldn't come to that. Any piece of evidence henceforth could prove decisive."

"Yes, I think so too. I just need a second to collect my thoughts. It might not look like it, but keeping up the performance in court under stress can be exhausting. I just hope the next detective we get on this case isn't corrupt like Herringway. Though I doubt Grubba can get to the new guy quick enough."

"Boos aren't easily bribed, in any case. King Boo wins their loyalty well, from all I've seen."

"In any case, I have a lot of work ahead of me. As for you, it doesn't look like you'll be spending the day in a cell at least. You'll be confined to your place of work with the rest of us, but I'd consider it an upgrade from jail."

"Oh, one thing before we go. This should go without saying, but try to stay out of Grubba's way. With his scheme rapidly getting unraveled, he's probably getting nervous. A cornered foe is a dangerous one, and I'd hate for you to disappear right before the end."

"Don't mention it. I have a feeling I would have gotten wrapped up in this one way or another. I have a theory as to Grubba's motive and if it pans out, well I'll just save it for the trial."
